What’s the Deal with Dialysis?

"What’s the Deal with Dialysis?" is a stylized healthcare narrative medicine documentary that follows dialysis technician Maurice Carlisle as he embarks on a personal and professional quest to find the collaboration between family practitioners, and nephrologists in treating chronic kidney disease  (CKD) patients. With CKD often progressing into End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), many patients are left facing the devastating need for dialysis. Maurice, after working in his own community for several years, he sets out to uncover how early and integrated care between family practitioners and nephrologists can prevent the progression of CKD, saving patients from dialysis and improving their quality of life. The film utilizes narrative medicine—the practice of using patient storytelling as a therapeutic and diagnostic tool—to deeply connect with CKD patients and explore their experiences. The film also highlights the urgency of addressing ESRD as a public health crisis, with a focus on early intervention and coordinated care.
